Upper Brace Braces connect two top corners and two bottom corners of the 72-inch-tall CPU rack to the walls. The hardware for these 4 braces is entirely off-the-shelf and cost less than $100. |
Carabiner Joint Eye bolts attached to the rack connect to the EMT tubing with cheap carabiners or clip rings. It is easy to remove the joints and temporarily move the rack when necessary. The braces only need to be strong enough to prevent the rack from rocking and "walking" during earthquake shaking. |
Wall Joint Each end of the tubing was flattened in a vise and drilled with a half-inch hole. The eye bolts on the walls can be screwed into wood wall studs, or here, screwed into anchors installed into the hollow steel studs our building has. |
Rack Connection Eye bolts are simply bolted through existing holes in the CPU rack. The joints allow some motion, but not much force is needed to prevent severe rocking of the tall rack. The braces do not have to be strong enough to hold the full weight of the rack. |
