The Institute of Earth Sciences (IES) at Academia Sinica, a center 
of excellence in Earth Science research in Taiwan, is searching for 
an outstanding scientist as its next Director.  With an annual 
operating and research budget of over six million US dollars, the 
IES carries out research in areas fundamental to the Earth and its 
environment.  Existing research efforts center on four areas: 
seismology, tectonophysics, geochemistry & cosmochemistry, and mineral 
& rock physics.  The Institute currently has 31 research scientists 
and an additional staff of over 100 (including postdoctoral fellows, 
technical personnel, research assistants, and administrative staff).  
Additional resources, including openings for research scientists, 
are expected to be available for the new Director to launch major 
initiatives in Earth Science. 

We welcome application by or nomination of interested candidates.  
The initial appointment, expected to begin on August 1, 2004, is for 
a term of three years and is renewable for another term.  The salary 
depends on qualifications and is commensurate with those at leading 
institutions in the United States. The position is open to all potential 
candidates without regard to ethnic or national origin.  Applicant should
