Detail tasking includes maintenance and troubleshooting of applications in C, C++, Perl, Java, and other software and associated UNIX hardware as well as Solaris 2.8 system level support; IP network administration including configuration of Cisco routers and frame relay circuit hardware; and information distribution applications, including web posting, email, and paging. The applicant will participate in development to implement new products, improve data availability, and operational reliability and efficiency. The applicant will also be involved in system design and review for new acquisition architecture. Job Duties 1. Administer the SCSN/CISN real-time data acquisition, processing, and analysis application software, and associated computer hardware and system software. This system provides the authoritative information regarding earthquake locations and magnitudes in southern California; 2. Administer IP networking and associated hardware; 3. Develop, implement,& maintain applications written in C++, Perl, Java, or other languages under UNIX Solaris, LINUX, or other operating systems; 4. Participate in procurement of new hardware or software; 5. Maintain user documentation for SCSN/CISN real-time systems; 6. Supervise outside contractors, including writing design specifications for tasks; 7. Prepare written reports, presentations, and assist in preparing proposals 8. Be the point of contact for data communications and other external maintenance services especially regarding data sharing agreements; Minimum Requirements BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering or Physical Science is required for this position. 3-5 years of experience in managing scientific or engineering application software in UNIX environment. Demonstrated skills in troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving existing software or scripts, working with computer hardware, and IP communications. Some experience with applications that interface with Oracle is desirable. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The qualified candidate should have an active interest in routine operations to ensure data integrity and availability, as well as innovation, and incorporating new efficiencies into the operation. Proven ability to work in a team of staff with a wide range of expertise is necessary. Excellent written and communications skills needed. Familiarity with one of the technology areas needed by SCSN/CISN, such as seismology, seismic instrumentation, LAN/WAN networking, is also desirable.
