The selected applicant will organize and manage the various aspects of the operation of the Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) earthquake monitoring system at Caltech. The applicant's responsibilities will be to provide supervision and direction for staff, and project management leadership to ensure timely data collection, product generation and distribution, as well as equipment reliability and efficiency. The applicant will also manage implementation of new hardware and software systems to meet new objectives. Job Duties 1) Provide supervision and direction for a diverse group of staff, whose primary functions are to: a. Operate the Caltech SCSN real-time acquisition & analysis systems, b. Develop applications software, c. Generate near-real time products, d. Maintain the remote seismic stations. 2) Provide project management for SCSN contracts, including determining task priorities, assigning tasks, and monitoring progress to meet project deadlines. 3) Engage staff in developing and implementing innovative approaches to improve the efficiencies and performance of the SCSN. 4) Lead the implementation of new technologies for the SCSN, including, hardware, IT networks, and new applications software in C++, Perl, Java, or other languages under UNIX Solaris, Linux. 5) Supervise outside contractors, including writing specifications for tasks. 6) Prepare and execute budgets of the operations. 7) Prepare written reports, presentations, and assist in preparing proposals. 8) Take an active part in staff hiring, motivating, coaching, and conducting performance evaluations. 9) Participation in fieldwork may be needed occasionally. Minimum Requirements The ideal candidate will have a BS or MS degree and at least 5 years of experience managing comparable technical projects. Familiarity with one of the areas relevant to SCSN, such as seismology, seismic instrumentation, software development, computer hardware, or IP data communications is also necessary. Demonstrated skills in scientific applications programming or administration of computer hardware. Excellent people skills are a must. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities The qualified candidate should have an active interest in innovation, new products, and incorporating new efficiencies into the operation. The candidate must enjoy the challenge of leadership and motivation of staff, and have the ability to supervise a staff with a wide range of expertise. Excellent writing and communication skills and a high level of initiative are required. Knowledge of seismology and seismic instrumentation is desirable.
