Dear Colleagues: X-Lines: 68 Status: RO The Earth Institute at Columbia University seeks outstanding post- doctoral scholars to apply to the Earth Institute Fellows Program. We ask your help in identifying the best and brightest individuals who wish to join a dynamic research environment where multi-disciplinary associations and collaborations are encouraged and supported. The Earth Institute Fellows Program provides young scholars with an opportunity to enhance their foundation in one of the Earth Institute's core disciplines - the earth sciences, biological sciences, engineering sciences, social sciences, and health sciences - while at the same time acquiring the cross-disciplinary expertise and breadth needed to understand and address the causes and consequences of poverty, hunger, disease, and environmental degradation. Earth Institute Fellows enjoy unusual freedom to design their own research agendas. Current projects include defining areas of genetic endemism in sub-Saharan Africa as a possible approach to setting conservation priorities; examining ways that public health practitioners in developing countries could use mobile and wireless technologies to increase their effectiveness; generating a nutrient budget for the ecosystem surrounding Kampala, Uganda; and examining ways to mitigate losses to civil infrastructure from natural disasters, particularly in developing countries. Fellows work within the Earth Institute unit best suited to their research. To facilitate critical thinking and advancement, each Fellow is guided by one or more senior scholars. In addition, Fellows also attend a unique series of seminars, dinners and special events that explore key interdisciplinary issues, bring Fellows together as a community, and allow Fellows to meet a diverse array of Columbia faculty and researchers. The Earth Institute at Columbia University is one of the world's pioneer academic center for mobilizing the sciences and public policy to build a sustainable future, especially for the world's poor. More than 800-earth, life and social scientists and engineers work together on issues relating to poverty, hunger, disease and environmental degradation. For current information on research and education programs at the Earth Institute, see its website at http://www.earthinstitute.columbia.edu/. Additional information on the Earth Institute Fellows Program and an online application are available on the Earth Institute Fellows web site (www.earth.columbia.edu/postdoc/index.html). Applications submitted by December 1, 2003 will be considered for fellowships starting in the summer or fall of 2004. We would greatly appreciate it if you could distribute this information, and the attached advertisement, to graduate students and professors in your department. Please also feel free to contact me if you have any questions about the program.
