Applicants should have a strong record of productive, original research and interests that complement and enhance the existing research areas in the Section. The Section undertakes studies of the Earth's continental and oceanic lithospheric and deeper mantle structure using principally seismological and electromagnetic methods. Candidates with more global interests, or with more theoretical interests that support the interpretation of observational data, are also encouraged to apply. The Section currently owns 16 broadband passive seismic systems, and operates the Irish national seismic network. Section members have a long and thriving history of collaboration on large-scale international projects, particularly with European partners. The School has access to high performance computational facilities through membership of the CosmoGrid Consortium (www.cosmogrid.ie). Applicants must have a PhD in seismology and should have several years of postdoctoral experience, preferably in a variety of international settings. Demonstrated breadth in application of seismological methods is an asset. The successful candidate is expected to lead a vigorous independent research programme, to supervise staff and research students, and to actively apply for, and be successful in obtaining, research grants from within Ireland, from the EU, and from elsewhere. The Institute is a pure research organisation and the post carries no formal teaching obligations, other than graduate student supervision, although participation in the programmes of the local universities is encouraged. Administrative experience is an advantage, as well as activities in the area of public outreach. Interpersonal skills are also important. More information about research activities at the DIAS School of Cosmic Physics can be found at the School's webpages, accessible via http://www.dias.ie. More specific information about the Geophysics Section can be obtained from the Head of Section, Professor Alan Jones, at alan@cp.dias.ie. Applications including CV, Publications List, a brief Research Plan and the names of five referees should be sent either: (i) electronically to: registrarsoffice@admin.dias.ie, quoting the reference number (SCP0502) in the subject line; or (ii) by surface post to: Registrar's Office, Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies, 10 Burlington Road, Dublin 4, Ireland. Please quote job reference SCP0502 in all correspondence. The application deadline is June 30th, 2005. Depending on circumstances, the search for candidates may be widened beyond the applications received. The Institute is an equal opportunity employer.
