This will appear as an advertisement in EOS and Geotimes. Thank you. **************************************************************** RESEARCH GEODESIST The Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology and the Seismological Laboratory, research and public service units of the University of Nevada, Reno, seek a geoscientist to build a program in geodetic research using the Global Positioning System and other techniques. The geoscience community in Nevada, including researchers and practitioners in NBMG, the Seismological Laboratory, the UNR Department of Geological Sciences and Center for Neotectonic Studies, the UNLV Department of Geoscience, the Desert Research Institute, the U.S. Geological Survey, and local mining and engineering industries, is recognized internationally for its excellence in tectonics, seismology, hydrogeology, atmospheric science, geomorphology, and mineral exploration, among other fields. We anticipate that the successful candidate will complement our existing expertise. Reno, on the eastern edge of the Sierra Nevada and within four hours driving to the San Francisco Bay area, is home for several hundred geoscientists. Applicants must have a doctorate in one of the geosciences (or earn it shortly after the starting date) and a demonstrated record of research using geodetic techniques as evidenced by dissertation research or peer-reviewed publications. Excellent communication skills, commitment to public service, demonstrated ability to complete projects in a timely manner, and ability to attract funding are essential. We seek an individual who is eager to apply GPS and other geodetic techniques to a wide range of geoscience problems. Areas of personal research are open. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in applications of GPS, gravity measurements, and/or other geodetic and geophysical techniques, such as radar interferometry. UNR owns several dual frequency GPS receivers that have been used in research on neotectonics and land subsidence. The successful candidate will be expected to help design GPS campaigns and to use UNR's extensive computer hardware to calculate highly accurate positions from GPS data. The successful candidate will be expected to initially work with data collected from a new network of continuous GPS receivers being installed in and around southern Nevada. This will include checking the accuracy and precision of calculations from the network, development of a quality assurance plan for the continuation of network operation by UNR, and investigation of the implications of these and related data for natural and human-induced ground motions, particularly earthquake hazards and land subsidence due to ground-water withdrawal, respectively. Funding for a part-time technician for up to four years and for a graduate research assistantship for at least two years will be made available to the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and to collaborate with other University and DRI faculty in developing additional funded projects. Opportunities may exist to participate in undergraduate or graduate teaching, but the primary responsibility will be research. Additional geophysical equipment at UNR includes permanent and portable seismometers, gravimeters, and magnetometers. NBMG and the Seismological Laboratory have excellent support staffs in administration, cartography, drafting, geographic information systems, telemetry, and seismic network maintenance. The position will be a non-tenure-track appointment at Rank 0(II) (assistant research scientist/assistant research professor level) at an academic-year base salary of $40,000 to $50,000, depending on experience. Pending final award of funding from the U.S. Department of Energy, which is expected on or shortly after October 1, 1998, the first year's base salary will be guaranteed, and, pending continued annual approval of funding and commendable performance, it is expected that DOE funding will cover the base salary for three to four years. Opportunity exists to significantly supplement the base salary with additional funding from other grants and contracts that the successful candidate helps to attract. The preferred starting date is on or shortly after January 1, 1999. Please submit a letter expressing your interest in the position, names and addresses of at least three references, and a complete vita to Geodesy Search Committee Chair, Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology, Mail Stop 178, University of Nevada, Reno, NV 89557-0088. To ensure full consideration, applicants are encouraged to have all information on file by October 15, 1998. For further information, please consult our home pages (http://www.nbmg.unr.edu and www.seismo.unr.edu). UNR is an AA/EO employer and employs only U.S. citizens and persons lawfully authorized to work in the United States. ************************************************************************ Jonathan G.
