Instructions for Viewing Lectures on a Macintosh
Do you have what it takes?
- Macintosh II or better computer (68030 processor minimum)
- Color display (grayscale works but is not great)
- 8 or more megabytes RAM memory
- 15 megabytes or more of free hard-disk space
- System 7.1 version software, or later
Installation Steps
- Insert Disk 1 into your Mac's floppy drive. A new window should appear
on your desktop.
- Double-click on the ``Lecture Installer'' icon in that window.
- The installer will ask you to insert the other disks one by one.
After inserting a disk, the installer will show you a dialog box listing
a file on that disk. Double-click on that file's name.
- After installation is complete, return the disks to the MSM Library.
Keep a copy of these instructions.
- The installer should have created two new folders on your desktop
or hard disk. Find the folder named ``Netscape1.0N'', and double-click
on it to open it. Note also where the new folder named ``100'' is located.
- Double-click on the ``Netscape1.0N'' application's ``N'' icon to
start the Netscape Navigator.
- After the Netscape Navigator has started up, find the ``Open File...''
item under the ``File'' menu, and select it.
- If your Mac has a good Internet connection, you can just trash the
``100'' folder and keep the Netscape Navigator. Use the ``Open Location...''
item in the ``File'' menu instead, and type in the URL:
http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/pub/louie/class/100/100-earthquakes.html .
Otherwise, proceed as below.
- In the file opening dialog that comes up, locate the ``100'' folder,
open it, and find the ``100-earthquakes.html'' file name in the list.
Double-click on that name.
- You should see a list of the lecture topics come up. You can click on
any underlined word to explore that topic.
- Please send any comments to
John Louie.
