Optional Field Trip Opportunity
See Geophysics in action, climb Sand Mountain, and learn the Pleistocene history of Lake Lahontan.
On Monday October 4 a Discovery Channel crew will film "booming dunes" at Sand Mountain, 2 hours east of Reno. We will help a crew from the UNR Geophysics program record sand booms on our multi-channel seismograph.
Depart: Monday October 4, 10:30 AM from the parking lot behind the LME building. Rain date is the next day, Tuesday, at 9:00 AM.
Return: about 6 PM the same day.
Transportation is provided: but you must let John Louie know by Weds. Sept. 22 to reserve your seat: email louie@seismo.unr.edu or call 784-4219 and leave a message. Include a phone number in case of schedule changes.
Extra Credit: available to participating 101 students who complete an optional exercise. Work gloves will be provided.
Bring: lunch, 2 liters water, walking shoes, sun hat, sunglasses. Any weather is possible - dress in layers. Bring a camera, hand lens, rock hammer, compass, or GPS if you have them.
