Geol 203 - Seismic Time Quiz

February 23, 2001 Name:

The whole class will work on this quiz together. Turn in your sheet to get credit for attendance and completeness.

1. Units and Abbreviations

Spell out the full name of each of the following standard, required SI unit abbreviations:
m = s =
m/s = km/s =
ms = Hz =
The following abbreviations do not conform to SI standards but commonly appear on seismic sections:
m s-1 = kft/sec =

2. Getting Depth From Time

During the last class we saw how to compute the depth of a reflection from its two-way travel time, where it is circled at the upper left of the stacked time section here. Use the equation at right to compute the depth of the deeper point on the same reflection, circled at the lower right. Assume the average seismic velocity above the reflection is 1000 m/s. State your result with the correct units. z = V t /2
