Running GM-SYS for Gravity and Magnetics Modeling at UNR

NGA has sent to help you:
Apr. 7 2000 - Version 4.0.4 of the GM-SYS gravity and magnetics modeling code has been reinstalled (thank you to whoever did it) and is working on the MMV Sun. Version 4.6 will arrive soon, and can be installed later.
To run GM-SYS on the MMV Sun (recommended):
1. Get a user account on the MMV Sun. Send email to fontaine@seismo
2. Find a computer at UNR that runs X-Windows, start X-Windows, start up a command terminal window, and find out the name of the machine where your display is. On any UNIX box, you can type the command:
```
	uname -a
```
  Let's assume the name is ``jitter.seismo.unr.edu''
3. In the terminal window type the commands:
```
	xhost +mmv.mines.unr.edu
	telnet mmv.mines.unr.edu
		(log in using your mmv.mines name and password)
	setenv DISPLAY jitter.seismo.unr.edu:0.0
		(change the machine name to the one you are displaying on)
	/usr/local/gmsys/gmxwin &
```
4. There are manuals and a tutorial for GM-SYS for X-Windows on the shelves in the MMV Lab. Any files you create and want to transfer to your computer you will be able to get via FTP from mmv.mines.unr.edu, logging in with your mmv.mines user name and password.
5. When you are done, quit GM-SYS from its File menu, log out from mmv.mines, and quit your X-Windows display server.
Feb. 2000 - To use a student version of GM-SYS on your PC, first acquire the gmsys.zip package (click here). Make a new folder on your hard drive and put the gmsys.zip file in it. Then when you double-click on the .zip file a DOS window should open and you will see the names of files expanded out of the archive. You should see a file called ``cnfgmsys.exe'' (hopefully with a DOS icon); double-click on it. You will have to change the display driver to something your Windows95-98 screen can emulate. You may have to change your Windows display settings as well (under Start->Settings->Control Panel->Display, Settings tab; primitive, eh?). If this works you should be able to start GM-SYS by double-clicking on the ``gm.exe'' DOS icon.
You can use the TEST or BLANK model in the GM-SYS folder as a template to set up the problems. There are manuals in the MMV Lab. The program will print out to an HP laserjet printer or to a postscript printer.
1996 - The GM-SYS analysis program for DOS (a local Seismo Sun link) provides interactive gravity and magnetic modeling. The references below show a (local) directory containing gravity and magnetic data and models from Geol 453/653 in the Spring semesters of '92 and '94; from northern Chicago Valley and southern Pahrump Valley:
- To run on a PC:
  1. Copy all the program files in this directory, excepting those starting with ``cv*'' or ``pahrum*'' (which are survey data files) to a floppy.
  2. Copy the files on the floppy to your PC disk.
  3. Run the cnfgmsys.exe configuration program, which asks about your display etc. You will need a mouse.
  4. Run the gm.exe program.
  5. In GM-SYS you can load the data set ``cvg3'' to see gravity data and a model from northern Chicago Valley, done in '92.
- To run on a Sun:
  1. Ask the System Administrator for permission to run GM-SYS in the ``/home/louie/tecopa92/d.gm/'' directory, so access can be enabled for you.
  2. Start the Sun DOS emulator remotely with a ``Xrsh phineas sunpc'' command. The SunPC window will appear on your Sun screen, but the program will actually be running on the machine phineas in LME 209. So any floppies or printer connections SunPC refers to will actually be on rumble. If you get a message saying that the floppy drive is not available, try another Sun having a floppy drive instead of rumble: quake, jolt, or shake.
  3. Once SunPC is running, the R: drive in DOS will actually take you to the root of the Sun file system. The H: drive is your home directory. Don't put anything in C:, it has only 5 Mbytes. So in DOS go to the GM-SYS directory and run it:
```
	cd r:\home\louie\tecopa92\d.gm
	gm
```
  4. In GM-SYS you can load the data set ``cvg3'' to see gravity data and a model from northern Chicago Valley, done in '92.
  5. When manipulating models in cross section, you will need to switch from a Sun mouse to a PC mouse, and then back again to manipulate any Sun windows. You switch mouse type by holding down the ``Meta'' (diamond-shaped) key and pressing ``M''.
  This is also possible with modification on the Power Mac in 320 LME using the ``SoftWindows'' application, and attaching a shared PC/Mac disk which is also a shared Mac/Sun disk.
