Geol 456/656, On-Line Lectures by J. Louie
Instructions for Viewing Lectures on a Macintosh
Do you have what it takes?
- Macintosh II or better computer (68030 processor minimum)
- Color display (grayscale works but is not great)
- 8 or more megabytes RAM memory
- 7 megabytes or more of free hard-disk space
- System 7.1 version software, or later
You can either install the lectures on your Mac's hard disk drive with the
floppy disks available on Library reserve, or by downloading them with
FTP if you have an indirect Internet connection.
Use one of the installation procedures below:
Floppy Disk Installation Steps
- Insert the Netscape disk into your Mac's floppy drive.
A new window should appear on your desktop.
- Double-click on the ``Netscape Installer'' or similar icon in that window,
and follow the instructions to install the Netscape 1.1 viewer application.
- If your Mac has a good Internet connection, you don't need to unpack
the Lecture disks; just keep the Netscape Navigator.
Use the ``Open Location...'' item in the ``File'' menu, and type in the URL:
http://www.seismo.unr.edu/ftp/pub/louie/class/plate-syll.html .
Otherwise, proceed as below.
- Insert the Lecture Disk 1 into your Mac's floppy drive.
A new window should appear on your desktop.
- Double-click on the ``Lecture Installer'' icon in that window.
- The installer will ask you to insert the other Lecture disks one by one.
After inserting a disk, the installer will show you a dialog box listing
a file on that disk. Double-click on that file's name.
- After installation is complete, return the disks to the MSM Library.
Keep a copy of these instructions.
Downloading the Lectures by FTP
- Use your FTP application to connect to quake.seismo.unr.edu
(IP address 134.197.33.40). Log in as user ``anoymous'', and
give your e-mail address as the password.
- If you need the Netscape Navigator application, change directories
to the pub/mac folder, and
get the file ``
netscape-1.1N.hqx''.
- If you do not have a way to Unstuff BinHex archives, set the file
type to ``MacBinary'' on your FTP application, and
get the file ``
stuffitexpander.bin'',
also in the pub/mac folder. The Macintosh application program StuffitExpander
should be created on your hard disk.
- Change directories to the pub/louie/class folder, and
get the file ``
plate-louie.hqx''.
- Close your FTP connection.
- Now, on your Mac desktop, locate and select the ``plate-louie.hqx''
file, and the ``netscape-1.1N.hqx'' file if you need it.
Drag the archive icons over your StuffitExpander application icon.
- Wait a few minutes for the installation to complete, following any
instructions that appear.
Viewing the Lectures
- One of the installation procedures above should have created two new folders on your desktop
or hard disk. Find the folder named ``Netscape1.1N'', and double-click
on it to open it. Note also where the new folders named ``plate'' and
``100'' are located.
- Double-click on the ``Netscape1.1N'' application's ``N'' icon to
start the Netscape Navigator.
- After the Netscape Navigator has started up, find the ``Open File...''
item under the ``File'' menu, and select it.
- In the file opening dialog that comes up, locate the folder that contains
the ``100'' and ``plate'' folders within it,
and find the ``plate-syll.html'' file name in the list.
Double-click on that name.
- You should see a list of the lecture topics come up. You can click on
any underlined word to explore that topic.
- Please send any comments to
John Louie.
