Course: Geochronology Spring, 1996 Geology 702z/ Sec. 001 Call Number: 84276 TBA but Wed 3:00-5:15 PM proposed in LMR Room 253 3 credits Instructor: Dr. Robert Karlin This class will take an in-depth look at the principles, applications, advantages, and limitations of isotopic dating methods in geology. The purpose of the course is to introduce geologists to the fundamentals of isotopic dating to enable them to critically evaluate the conclusions derived from isotopic data. The book "Principles of Isotope Geology" by Gunter Faure will be used as a text. The class will be in a seminar format with student groups reading and leading discussion on important recent advances and classic research papers on dating techniques such as: Rb/Sr; Sr87/Sr86; K/Ar; Ar40/Ar39; REE dating; U/Th/Pb; Pb isotopes; fission track; U-series disequilibrium; C14; C13; O18; as well as several Quaternary dating methods. Please let me know if you are planning to take the course, so that we can schedule it for a convenient time. My e-mail address is karlin@mines.unr.edu
