The Department of Geological Sciences announces the THIRD annual ICHTHYOSAUR FIELD TRIP, which will occur over the weekend of April 12 & 13th, 1997. (This is the first weekend AFTER spring break.) As we did last year, on Saturday we'll visit Sand Mountain outside Fallon, look at Lake Lahontan shorelines, collect metamorphic rocks in Sand Pass, visit Kennecott's large gold mine at Rawhide, and see the scarps left by the huge (M ~ 7.4) earthquakes of December 1954 at Fairview Peak. We'll camp at Ichthyosaur State Park Saturday night. Then on Sunday, we'll have a special tour of the fossil exhibit in the morning. On our return, we'll see some igneous rocks outside Hawthorne, look at Walker Lake, and see the old copper-mining pit at Yerington (with a brief stop for copper mineral collecting). The trip is open to all undergraduate and graduate students, and is especially directed toward beginning undergrads. We'll provide all transportation, and INCLUDE dinner Saturday night and breakfast Sunday morning, for a nominal charge of just $10. THE DETAILS: What do I need to bring? - Camping gear for one night.
