Updating Seismo-Watch on UNRSL

  1. Every week, check ftp://quake.seismo.unr.edu/pub/updates/watson/. Charlie Watson should place a new version of the WGB Seismo-Watch there weekly. If he does not for several weeks, check with him.
  2. If there is a new .eps file, log into a Seismo Sun and ``cd /quake/s1/ftp/pub/updates/watson''.
  3. ``ls -l *.eps''. If there are old .eps files already converted to .pdf, delete them with ``rm -i *.eps''.
  4. ``distill -asciipdf on *.eps''. If the distiller asks you to select a PDF compatibility level, choose version 2.1.
  5. Reload ftp://quake.seismo.unr.edu/pub/updates/watson/ in your browser. Click on the new .pdf file or files.
  6. Abobe Acrobat Reader or Exchange version 3.0 should start up and show you the Seismo-Watch graphic. If not, configure your browser to start one of those programs when you click on an Acrobat PDF file. For software and more info, go to the Adobe website.
  7. Near the bottom left of the Acrobat window is a scale menu (with a magnifying glass icon). Select 125% and observe readability on your screen. If not enough, select 150% but no more.
  8. Examine the date under ``Earthquakes for week of'' and make sure it makes sense. If Charlie has forgotten to change it, edit the date by opening the .pdf file in ``illustrator''; saving the fixed file as PDF as well.
  9. On a Sun, start the ``snapshot'' tool from the Workspace->Programs menu. On another machine, use Tools->Select Graphics in Acrobat. Set snapshot to Snap Type: Region.
  10. Expose the entire graphic in Acrobat. Press the Snap button in snapshot.
  11. Carefully select the entire graphic and some of the white page surrounding it, by dragging with the left mouse button. Do not select any of the page border. Press the middle mouse button to snap the graphic, or the right button to try again.
  12. Press Save in snapshot, and save in your home directory as ``snapshot.rs''.
  13. Close Acrobat and snapshot. Open ``xv3''.
  14. Press the right mouse button on the xv3 window to bring up the control panel. Push Load, and find the ``snapshot.rs'' file.
  15. Press AutoCrop in the control panel, and check the graphic.
  16. Press Save, and find the /quake/s1/ftp/pub/updates/watson directory. Select the name of the .pdf file you are looking at, and then select Format: GIF and Colors: Reduced Color.
  17. Change the file name suffix to ``.GIF'', and press OK.
  18. If this is the most recent Seismo-Watch, save the graphic again with the name ``latest.GIF'' (exactly). Allow the older file to be overwritten.
  19. Close xv3.
  20. Reload and check the Seismo-Watch page in your browser.
  21. If everything is OK, you can delete the large .eps files with ``rm -i *.eps''.

  22. Every June, create a directory in /quake/s1/ftp/pub/updates/watson for the previous year's files, and move them all into it.
