An earthquake of magnitude M 5.4 occurred at 3:39 PM (PDT) on Thursday, 17
August 1995 near Ridgecrest, California. This earthquake was widely felt in
the Las Vegas area and was also felt at the Nevada Test Site and other Nevada
localities. The hypocenter coordinates are 35.780 N, 117.660 W at a depth of
5 km (3 mi). This location is approximately 16 km (10 mi) N of Ridgecrest.
The UNR Seismological Laboratory (702-784-4976 or http://www.seismo.unr.edu on
the World Wide Web) will be accepting and evaluating felt reports on this
earthquake.
