A series of earthquakes has occurred near Hawthorne, Nevada,
this AM (Thursday August 21). The activity lies approximately 15
km (10 mi) northeast of Hawthorne. The locations are beneath the
southern flank of the Gillis Range. These earthquakes are not
located on any named fault. The largest of the events had a
local Richter magnitude 4.6 and occurred at 9:36 PDT with a location
of 38.593N, 118.499W at a depth of approximately 10 km (6
mi). Other events located were at 8:36 PDT with M = 4.2 and at
9:11 PDT with M = 4.5. The Seismological Laboratory continues to
record events from this earthquake sequence.
