As of 9:00 AM, the Seismological Laboratory had recorded 8 aftershocks of this morning's event. The largest were at 2:16 AM (preliminary magnitude 3.1) and 5:11 AM (preliminary magnitude 3.3).
This event is in the vicinity of the September 12, 1994, Double Spring Flat earthquake, and can be correctly described as an aftershock of that earlier event. The Double Spring Flat earthquake had a magnitude 6.0. Today's earthquake occurred about 6 miles southeast of the epicenter of the Double Spring Flat, and extends the aftershock zone slightly towards the southeast, towards Antelope Valley. This morning's earthquake had a strike slip mechanism. We will provide a map of the locations of this event and its relationship to the Double Spring Flat earthquake sequence on request.
