A magnitude 4.2 earthquake occurred this afternoon about 8 miles north of
Sutcliffe on the west shore of Pyramid Lake. The preliminary location
by the University of Nevada, Reno, Seismological Laboratory is 40 degrees
1.77' north latitude, 119 degrees, 37.35' west longitude. The preliminary depth
is 13 km (8 mi). The time of this event was December 2, 1996, at 3:33 PM,
Pacific Standard Time. The Seismological Laboratory has not received any
reports of damage at this time.

A magnitude 4.4 earthquake occurred this morning in Antelope
Valley near Topaz Lake. The preliminary location by the
University of Nevada, Reno, Seismological Laboratory is 38
degrees 40.97' north latitude, 119 degrees, 30.61' west
longitude. The depth is not well determined. The time of
this event was December 12, 1996, at 10:35:50 AM, Pacific
Standard Time. The Seismological Laboratory has not
received any reports of damage at this time although numerous
felt reports have been received.
