The map on the left shows mountains (shaded) and valleys (white) of southern Nevada. The red lines highlight three major faults. The Death Valley and Furnace Creek faults (red highlights on the left) are the most active faults in the region. The map on the right is a more detailed shaded-relief map of Las Vegas. Several normal faults cut through the urbanized area. Most of the earthquakes near Las Vegas have magnitudes under 5.0. The cluster southeast of central Las Vegas had magnitude up to 5.0, and were triggered by the filling of Lake Mead.
