Notes:
Map, seismicity of Nevada. This is a nice, colorful rendition prepared by cartographers in the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology. Every part of the state has earthquakes, but the western part has the highest hazard, as seen by the greater number of yellow-colored events, which are the larger events. The bright red in the southern part of the state is partly the result of much more intense monitoring associated with nuclear testing and the proposed Yucca Mountain repository. Similarly, the northern and eastern parts of the state have the smallest numbers of instruments, and more intense monitoring there might turn up greater numbers of earthquakes than what appear here. Later slides that use a magnitude threshold give a better picture of the Nevada hazard.
