Seismic Principles Illustrations

The wave-propagation demonstration was computed with a finite-difference solution of the acoustic wave equation shown in class. It shows a 50 m by 50 m cross-section of wave propagation in a heterogeneous medium that includes a cavity, such as a lava tube.

You can acquire a QuickTime-format movie of the demo by clicking on the tube.mov file here, or an MPEG-format movie by clicking on the tube.mpeg file here.

The volume demo data are accessible in Sun's VFF format by clicking on the tubesl.vff file here. You can display it on a Sun workstation by starting the SunVision application and selecting the SunVoxel tool. On a Mac you can acquire the MacCubeView application for viewing the same data.

A Java-based wave-propagation demo is available from a page for a Seismic Imaging lab exercise. In addition, a similar demonstration is available in various WWW formats; click here to try out your browser's capabilities.
