Recommended Department of Geological Sciences Bylaws regarding Graduate Faculty


I. Graduate Faculty defined according to the UNR Bylaws:


The UNR Bylaws state that the Graduate Faculty shall consist of those members of the faculty (as faculty are defined in Section 15 of the UNR Bylaws) or adjunct faculty and clinical faculty (as defined in Section 22 of the UNR Bylaws) appointed to it by an instructional department or program. Each instructional department or program shall develop criteria for appointment to the Graduate Faculty and shall place the criteria on file with the program and with the Graduate School. Any subsequent changes in those criteria shall be placed on file with the program and the Graduate School before they are put into use. Notices of appointments shall be forwarded to the Graduate School.


Appointments of the Graduate Faculty shall be based on a capability to contribute to graduate education demonstrated through:


  1. receipt of a terminal degree in a specialty considered to be appropriate by the department or program,

  2. research competence, and

  3. ability to teach graduate students.


Research competence may be demonstrated by scientific, creative, or other scholarly activities consistent with the department or program. These should include, but are not limited to, refereed national or regional publications, presentations, or other refereed creative accomplishments. Ability to teach graduate students individually or in groups may be demonstrated by peer and/or student evaluation of classroom, laboratory, or clinical instruction, or supervision of research or creative activity.


Members of the faculty who have not been appointed to the Graduate Faculty may, upon approval by the Graduate Dean, be permitted to teach specified graduate courses and serve on graduate advisory-examining committees. However, such persons shall not be permitted to chair graduate advisory-examining committees.


Regular faculty members at UNLV and DRI can be appointed to Graduate Faculty status in the same manner as UNR faculty. UNLV faculty who are accorded Graduate Faculty status are subject to the same rules and have the same rights and privileges as UNR Graduate Faculty except that they have no voting privileges on university-wide matters, though they may have such privileges on specific graduate program matters as outlined in the program bylaws, shall not chair student advisory committees, and are not eligible to serve as university-at-large members of advisory committees.


II. Definition of a Graduate Faculty member in the Department of Geological Sciences:


  1. Receipt of a Ph.D. degree in a specialty considered to be appropriate by the Department of Geological Sciences

  2. Research and competence as demonstrated by active and current scientific activities including but not limited to refereed national or regional publications, presentations, and other scholarly activities (e.g. shortcourses, consulting)

  3. Ability to teach and advise graduate students individually or in groups as demonstrated by peer and/or student evaluation of courses taught, field and/or laboratory instruction, or supervision of student research.


III. Appointment and evaluation of Graduate Faculty in the Department of Geological Sciences.


  1. Tenure-track faculty with appointments in within the Department of Geological Sciences shall become Graduate Faculty at the time of their initial contract and shall remain as Graduate Faculty as long as they are faculty with appointments inin the Department.

  2. Administrative, Research, non-tenure-track faculty, and faculty with appointments in from other departments or colleges may be considered for appointment to Graduate Faculty status in the Department of Geological Sciences following the receipt of an application. The application shall include a written request from the prospective Graduate Faculty Member, submission of a curriculum vita, and two letters of recommendation from referees outside the Department who are from the scientific discipline of the applicant. These Graduate Faculty shall be appointed to a three-year term and their Graduate Faculty status shall be evaluated annually. Reappointment to successive three-year terms is described below in Section III. F.

  3. All Graduate Faculty shall be required each year to provide the Department office with a current Curriculum Vita in standard formatin standard format to be kept on file. It is recommended that the vitae be given to the Department secretary at the time of annual evaluations, either on disk or by electronic submission.

  4. Graduate Faculty defined in Section III.B. above should maintain a research relationship with the UNR Department of Geological Sciences through active collaboration with Department faculty and/or students or serving on Departmental committees. A lack of participation of such Graduate Faculty in Departmental activities or failure to provide an updated vita for a period of 2 years shall result in procedures (see III.FF. below) to remove the person from Graduate Faculty status in the Department.

  5. Graduate faculty are expected to be conversant with, and to follow all departmental policies relating to graduate students and graduate programs.

  6. Department of Geological Sciences Chair shall appoint an evaluation committee to review the vitae of outside Graduate Faculty not having an appointment in the Department of Geological Sciences as defined in the departmental bylaws. Graduate Faculty not meeting the criteria in Section II. and/or III.C. above shall be notified of their change in status in a letter from the Department Chair. Faculty wishing to be reinstated to Graduate Faculty status shall do so through the same procedure as new Graduate Faculty (see Section III.B above) and meet the requirements given in Section II. above. Reappointment of active Graduate Faculty to another three-year term will require a written request from the Graduate Faculty Member and review of activities during the previous three-year term by the evaluation committee.


IV. Graduate student advisory-examining committees.


  1. Master's advisory-examining committees shall consist of at least three committee members. At least one committee member shall be a Department Faculty member with an appointment in the Department of Geological Sciences..

  2. Ph.D. advisory-examining committees shall consist of at least five committee members. At least two committee members shall be Department Faculty members with appointments in the Department of Geological Sciences.

  3. Graduate Faculty defined in Section III.B. above may chair graduate student advisory-examining committees in the Department of Geological Sciences within the conditions given in Sections IV. A and B. above.
