To All, There are many changes to policies in LMR 351 this semester, since computer science has left for their own new lab. In the very near future, we will be replacing all the client machines in the lab with new, faster machines. The lab is open to all faculty and students of MSM. You do need an account to access the machines and software in the lab. Account requests must come from faculty members (not students) and should be directed to me, (andrews@mines.unr.edu) with at least THREE DAYS lead time. The account request MUST include the full name and SSN for each student who requires an account. The software on the machines currently includes: MS office 95; MathCAD 7; MatLab 5.3; Microsoft C++ and Fortran compilers; ChemCAD; MiniTab; Xwin32; telnet; ftp; Netscape; Argus One; Acrobat Reader; Rockview; Rockworks; Modflow; gms; GWVistas; Picles, Mineql; Sefmesh; and Visio32. If you need additional software installed for your classes, this is also handled through me. At least ONE-WEEK notice is necessary, and legally licensed media is required. It is a good idea to check that the software you require is present on the machines in the lab and in good working order several weeks before you plan on using the lab for classes. This lab has two primary functions: First, it is open a large number of hours per week for students to use independently for classwork, etc. Second, it is available for classroom use. If you would like to hold a class in the room, please reserve the room through Melissa Bell in the Dean's office at least THREE DAYS in advance. A week would be better. Also, please post a note on the door in advance to give other students a heads-up that the lab won't be available during that time. Many have discovered that it is helpful to project the instructor's monitor on the screen in the front of the room, and a projector is available for this purpose. Please reserve the projector through Lezli at x4307. Finally, the room is also available to schedule classes for the duration of the semester, perhaps weekly at the same time each week. So far, only spring-semester classes at MSM have been held there, but it is available both fall and spring. Ultimately, responsibility for this lab lies with the Dean, who has delegated authority to the computer committee. Questions should be directed to Steve Wheatcraft or Chuck Coronella.
