From: Tom Andrews Date: Tue, 28 Mar 2000 18:00:29 GMT Subject: Network upgrades/changes To All, This is the first of a planned series of informative emails describing the equipment upgrades and network changes to the seismology (134.197.33.0) network. On March 12, the old quake and rumble were decommissioned and replaced by two new, rack mounted Sun Netra servers running the Solaris 2.7 operating system. The new quake and rumble have considerably more disk space and of course are much faster machines. Since March 12 I have upgraded jolt, the old rumble (rumble2), and phineas to Solaris 2.7. I have also been working diligently to restructure network services in a more orderly, efficient manner. File service will eventually be concentrated on the new quake and rumble. Programs which were designed to run under the old SunOS4 operating system will be concentrated on the old quake machine, which will be re-named (right now it is called quake2). New solaris software will be concentrated on rumble. For now, the old SunOS4 software can be mounted from quake2:/usr/local and is mounted by default under /sunos4/local on quake, rumble, jolt, slip, and phineas. The new solaris software is mounted on these machines from rumble:/usr/local under /usr/local. Most of the old software from quake2 will run under solaris, but almost none of the solaris software will run on quake2 and is therefore not mounted there. To get your paths set correctly to find the software on these machines, I have redone the default .cshrc and .login files for seismology. You can copy these from /usr/local/skel where they are named local.cshrc and local.login. While logged into quake, slip, jolt, phineas, rumble2, or rumble, you can issue the following commands to replace your current files: cd cp /usr/local/skel/local.* . mv .cshrc .cshrc.old mv .login .login.old mv local.cshrc .cshrc mv local.login .login If you have questions, or comments, please let me know. More emails will follow as the final form of the network takes shape. Tom Improvements to the Seismology Network April 2000 Summary There are 3 new ultrasparc workstations in LME 320, which replace the old "rumble", "jolt", and "saturn". The new quake and rumble are now rack mounted netras in the YMP lab. All major seismo Unix computers are now running Solaris 2.7 except quiver (the old "quake"). Sun OS 4.3.1 was retained on quiver for compatability purposes with an number of older software programs. The old programs are nfs mounted under /sunos4/local and the newer solaris programs are mounted under /user/local on all the major machines. Machine Changes: old quake - sparcstation 5, now "quiver" new quake - new rack mounted netra old rumble - sparcstation 10, now "jitter" new rumble - new rack mounted netra yucca - sparc X terminal, retired no replacement saturn - sparcstation 5, retired no replacement old rattle - sparc X terminal, retired new rattle - new ultrasparc 5 old jolt - sparcstation10, now "shift" new jolt - new ultrasparc 5 unrnet - new ultrasparc 10 Disks and disk space: Machines not listed below were not materially affected by the upgrades.
