On September 20, 2000, the Western States Seismic Policy Council (www.wsspc.org) presented a National Award of Excellence in the category of Outreach to Schools to the Nevada Seismological Laboratory. The award was made for the Lab's efforts on the Nevada Earthquake Safety Calendar and related efforts of the Nevada Earthquake Safety Council's Education Committee. The award was be presented during the National Earthquake Risk Management Conference in Seattle, by Larry Fellows of the WSSPC Board. Dr. John Anderson accepted the award for Diane dePolo, who leads NSL outreach efforts to schools. The Nevada Earthquake Calendar Project integrated with the rest of the Nevada Earthquake Safety Council's education efforts, including a poster contest for school children, and earthquake drills during Earthquake Awareness Week. Each year, Ms. dePolo has raised sufficient donations for the calendar to be distributed to school children throughout Nevada.
