Objectives

The Nevada Seismological Lab is convening a 1-day followup workshop on creating a Western Basin and Range Community Velocity Model (WBRCVM), with generous support from the FY'08 USGS NEHRP-NIW panel. The workshop will be held in Reno on November 3, 2008 (Monday).

The objectives of this followup workshop are two-fold:

  1. To confirm the organization of a Western Basin and Range community seismic-velocity modeling effort, contributing toward the goal of predicting earthquake ground motions in urban areas and other sensitive sites. The community model will address seismic velocities at the crustal, basin, and geotechnical scales; and should contribute directly toward an overall Great Basin Community Velocity Model (to eventually include Utah, Arizona, and other area north and east).

  2. To hear additional advice from national experts who have constructed CVMs for other areas including Utah, to assess what CVM features most affect predicted ground motions, and thus prioritize our needs for geological and seismic-velocity data. We hope to have heard whether WBRCVM construction efforts have been funded by the NEHRP-NIW program for FY09, and to give appropriate guidance to funded and unfunded projects.
If you are interested in contributing to the WBRCVM, in using it to predict ground motions; or you have experience creating CVMs for such purposes in other regions, we hope you will be able to attend. Make your plans now! (See
How to Register below.)

Participant Support

The USGS NEHRP-NIW panel has kindly provided support for these workshops, including refreshments and box lunches during the sessions.

In addition, out-of-town participants will receive an honorarium for attending the followup workshop and participating in discussion. The honorarium is expected to be approximately $400. This should provide support for participants' travel costs ($300 roundtrip airfare + $50 for 1 night in a cheap hotel). Please register early, before mid-October, if you are applying for an honorarium.

Travel and Accommodations

Southwest serves the Reno/Tahoe Airport (RNO) with the most flights. The Reno/Tahoe Airport is only 15 minutes and a $15 cab ride from UNR.

We have a list of nearby hotels here. Take a look at renotravel.com for hotel deals. On their map, the south end of the UNR campus is the purple area at the upper edge. Travelocity is offering good air+room packages. Most of the major hotels are within a 15-minute walk of campus, or downtown along the free "Sierra Spirit" city bus route (campus is the route's northern terminus). The following hotels are a few miles and 10-15 minutes drive from the workshop on campus: Grand Sierra; Nugget; Best Western- Airport Plaza; Comfort Inn and Suites Airport; Atlantis; and Peppermill.

Parking is available for $5 all day on the top level of the Brian J. Whalen Parking Complex, building 083 on N. Virginia St. at the middle of campus. The new Crowley Student Union is just to the northeast; it is the building with a Starbucks at ground level.
