The map below shows Quaternary fault traces in and adjacent to Las
Vegas Valley (black lines). The fault bounding Frenchman Mountain
(stippled area at right) has the ability to generate earthquakes.
The origin of faults within Las Vegas Valley is still debated by scientists:
they are likely from earthquakes; alternatively they may have been
produced by prehistorical lowering of the water table and differential
compaction. The gray contours show the degree of modern land subsidence
due to the pumping of groundwater. The dark areas labeled with letters
are regions of active fissure development, which are almost certainly
caused by groundwater withdrawal.
