Nevada Seismological Lab Microwave Network

To reduce the costs of two-way communication between Reno and almost 100 seismic monitoring stations spread over an area of 150,000 square kilometers in Nevada and eastern California, the Seismological Lab has developed its own microwave network. This map shows that network, developed between 1990 and 2000 by the Lab's Engineer, Walter Nicks.

Individual stations communicate with microwave nodes by radio. Although the Lab must maintain radio-frequency licenses and permits to operate mountaintop relay sites, we are completely free of charges from telecomm utilities. Our data processing center at the University of Nevada, Reno will have 155 Mbps Internet2 connectivity to vBNS and the Abilene networks in October 2000.
