Nevada Seismological Laboratory

The University of Nevada Seismological Laboratory recorded an earthquake of M = 3.7 at 8:13 AM (PDT) today, June 2. The preliminary location of the event is 37.83N, 115.98W, a remote location near the southeast end of Railroad Valley, approximately 105 km (65 mi) ESE of Tonopah, Nevada. The depth was computed to be approximately 15 km (9 mi), but depth is not well determined due to lack of near recording stations. We have not received any reports that this earthquake was felt.

The University of Nevada Seismological Laboratory recorded an earthquake of M = 3.5 at 12:50 AM (PDT) today, June 15, near Portola, California. It was followed by another event of almost the same magnitude and location a minute later. The preliminary location of the event is 39.76N, 120.57W, approximately 8 km (5 mi) SW of Portola, California. The depth was computed to be approximately 16 km (10 mi), but depth is not well determined due to lack of near recording stations. Numerous aftershocks have been recorded. This area has had earthquakes of similar or larger magnitude in the past, and today’s event is not unexpected. We have received several felt reports from Portola, Graeagle, Frenchman Lake, California, and northwest Reno, Nevada, for this earthquake, but no damage has been reported.
