Nevada Seismological Laboratory

May 22, 2000 1:00 PM PDT

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory recorded an earthquake of M = 2.3 at 10:53 PM (PDT) Sunday, May 21, at South Lake Tahoe. The preliminary location of the event is 37.96N, 119.94W, approximately at the Nevada-California boundary and just inside the lakeshore. The depth was computed to be approximately 12 km (7 mi). Several felt reports have been received on this earthquake; but, due to its small size, no damage has been reported. This earthquake is not unexpected in the moderately active seismic area around Lake Tahoe. An earthquake of M = 4.9 was recorded on October 30, 1998, north of Incline Village.
