27 September 1999

The University of Nevada Seismological Laboratory recorded an earthquake of 4.7 (ML) at 9:15 AM (PDT) Sunday, September 26, near Scotty’s Junction, Nevada. It was followed four hours later by another event of approximately 0.5 less magnitude and nearly the same location at 1:10 PM (PDT). The preliminary location of the first event is 37.38N, 117.10W, approximately 12 km (7 mi)NNW of Scotty’s Junction. The depth was computed to be approximately 8 km (5 mi), but depth is not well determined due to lack of near recording stations. The focal mechanism of this event is predominantly dip-slip. Numerous aftershocks have been recorded. This location had a M = 5.7 earthquake on August 1 of this year, and thousands of aftershocks had been recorded at the Seismological Laboratory before yesterday’s event.

The data reported here is preliminary. For more information, contact the Seismological Laboratory, (775) 784-4975. The free pamphlet "Earthquakes in Nevada and How to Survive Them," is available on request.
