The UNR Seismological Laboratory maintains a network of over 100 sensors
spread across Nevada and eastern California, to detect and locate earthquakes.
Usually, earthquake locations and magnitudes are estimated using computerized
analysis of digitized data from these sensors. However, this analog helicorder
display provides an effective backup in case of computer failures, as well
as an immediate and very visual indicator of earthquake activity for
public viewing.
