Map of Nevada earthquakes, magnitude 5.0 or larger. This is the output of a search on the web site at the Nevada Seismological Laboratory (www.seismo.unr.edu). Students can easily search for any magnitude range and any location to get the Nevada earthquake history.
Even though the Reno – Carson area has had more strong earthquakes than other parts of Nevada, nobody in the state should be complacent. Large earthquakes will eventually occur everyplace in the state, but just not as frequently as near Reno. When they do occur, the shaking is just as strong as it was in other disasterous earthquakes in other relatively lower risk areas, such as Kobe, Japan, and Bhuj, India.
